Pupils of the Goethe-Gymnasium Karlsruhe

As part of a visit to the Goethe-Gymnasium Karlsruhe working group for gifted students, twelve pupils from Years 7 and 8 were able to gain their first insights into geodesy. After an introduction to the subject and Thales' theorem by Dr. Manfred Juretzko, the participants carried out a practical exercise in Fasanengarten.

The aim was to check Thales' theorem using geodetic measuring methods. To do this, the diameter and center of an imaginary circle was marked on the ground using alignment rods. The pupils then determined the angle between the two end points of the diameter using a tachymeter set up at a radius distance from the center point. According to Thales' theorem, this resulted in a right angle.

The pupils thus put mathematics into practice and gained their first experience in the field of measurement.
