Profile of the Geodetic Institute (GIK)

The Geodetic Institute – as part of the Faculty of "Civil Engineering, Geo- and Environmental Sciences" at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology – carries out research, teaching and innovation in the fields of Geodesy and Geoinformation (GuG). The Institute is composed of three departments: Geoinformatics, Geodetic Earth System Sciences, as well as Geodetic Measurement and Sensor Technology, where new methods and tools for the collection, modeling, management, visualisation and analysis of spatial data are explored and linked. All three departments are involved at the Bachelor and Masters level of the program "Geodesy and Geoinformatics", which is characterised by a wide range of courses and support.

The Geodetic Institute comes from a long history of development and today defines themselves through their interdisciplinary work as a partner of applied geosciences as well as a link between Civil Engineering, Geo- and Environmental Sciences. The teaching and research focus of the Institute is closely linked to the Institute for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing (IPF), which is visible for example in the Research Group Hydrosphere, and the new Research Network of Geoinformatics. Moreover, the Bachelor and Masters study program „Geodesy and Geoinformatics“ is supported by both institutions (GIK and IPF).
